Immunopatogenesi dell'AIDS

Obiettivo generale della nostra Unità è lo studio dell’interazione tra il virus HIV, agente causale della sindrome da immunodeficienza acquisita (AIDS) e le sue cellule bersaglio, in particolare linfociti T CD4+ e monociti-macrofagi. Il virus perturba il network citochinico mentre citochine e chemochine regolano l’efficienza d’infezione e di propagazione del virus tra le cellule immunitarie agendo a tutti i livelli del ciclo vitale del virus. In quest’ottica vengono anche studiate specifiche vie di trasduzione del segnale, quale la via “JAK/STAT”, e alcuni fattori trascrizionali attivi in linfociti e macrofagi (per esempio, NF-kB e AP-1) noti per poter regolare la trascrizione virale. Molecole quali la tossina della pertosse o l’urochinasi vengono utilizzate quali strumenti per meglio caratterizzare la reciproca interazione virus/ospite anche nell’ottica d’identificare potenziali “lead compounds” da cui sviluppare nuovi farmaci anti-retrovirali.
